) T/ X2 M9 ~( ]7 @* o The defeat of the Chinese Imperial forces in the 2nd Opium War (1856-1860) was secured by the final advance on Peking in the summer of 1860. The combined British and French forces re-captured the Taku forts at the mouth of the Pei-Ho river on 21st August and then advanced up-river, finally reaching Peking on 22nd Spetember 1860. With the allies arrival, the Emperor went into exile and the Summer Palace was burnt by the British.

The present maps detail the chronology of the advance of a contingent of French forces from the Taku forts to Yuanmingyuan (The Summer Palace) and the details of all the camps and actions.
