The combined British and French forces re-captured the Taku forts at the mouth of the Pei-Ho river on 21st August and then advanced up-river, finally reaching Peking on 22nd Spetember 1860. With the allies arrival, the Emperor went into exile and the Summer Palace was burnt by the British.
